Godric Gryffindor was an accomplished wizard dueler who advocated against discrimination towards Muggles and Muggle-born wizards. Godric founded Hogwarts, School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, along with Rowena Ravenclaw, Helga Hufflepuff, and his close friend Salazar Slytherin although he and Salazar fundamentally disagreed about allowing Muggle-born students to attend. Godric selected students for Gryffindor House based upon their courage, determination, and strength of character, and created the Sorting Hat to continue selecting students based upon each House's virtues after the Founders died. Godric's goblin made, ruby-encrusted sword was considered a relic after his death and can be conjured by the Sorting Hat to appear to a member of Gryffindor House in a time of great need.
I've always considered myself a Gryffindor, and when designing Godric I really leaned into the "warrior" aspect and envisioned him as a type of knight. This costume started with me finding a metal breastplate and gauntlets online, and I created the rest of the costume's design around incorporating the armor pieces. I designed an under armor tunic from maroon and mustard twill fabric in a typical medieval style, and for extra detail I added Norse runes on each sleeve, with protective ones on the left arm and offensive ones on the right. I used red and gold cotton fabric to create a patchwork square pattern, out of which I fashioned a hood yoke which ties over the armor breastplate. For the cape I used maroon fabric for the back and lined it with red and gold upholstry fabric for texture. On the back of the cape is a gold lion, the mascot of Gryffindor, which is fused as an appliqué and then satin stitched with gold ombre embroidery thread to give it a gradient edge. Most of the accessories are random medieval-style ones I already had: various belts, pouches, and potion bottles, however the wand is an official resin one which I also use for Sirius Black, and the Sword of Gryffindor I made myself out of wood and resin. The hilt of the sword I sculpted one-half of in clay using high-res reference images to get all of the detailing on it correct. I then made a mold of the sculpture and cast two halves of the hilt. The hilt was then sandwiched around the wood blade I fashioned, and everything was painted silver. I cast some of the red gems in resin and inserted them into the hilt, but the tiny ones are plastic ones I glued on with tweezers. Overall the sword is my favorite part of this costume! Finally, while the other members of our Hogwarts Founders group bought their house banners, I couldn't find a Gryffindor one anywhere and ended up making my own out of leftover fabric from the costume. This costume is a lot of fun to wear, especially with our full group, despite the armor being heavy and uncomfortable. I love giving out points to Gryffindor students I see walk by!
