Vash is the most feared outlaw on the planet Gunsmoke, with a sixty billion double dollar bounty on his head for the destruction of the city of July. Counter to this fearsome reputation, Vash displays a kindhearted, goofy demeanor and goes out of his way not to hurt anyone. Most of the damage attributed to Vash is actually caused by bounty hunters in pursuit of the reward for his capture. Vash only recalls fragments of the city, having lost most of his memories. As he wanders from town to town, getting into and out of trouble, he discovers more about the truth of his family.

Construction Notes:
Vash was my very first cosplay costume, and the character that got me into cosplay in general. I've reworked and remade this costume a number of times since its debut at Anime Boston 2004, where I earned the nickname "Leathery Vash" for making the costume out of a pleather material instead of cotton fabric - something which was unusual at the time. The current version is less shiny but more deserving of the nickname as it is actually made from real leather. I patterned this using my previous versions as a base, splitting the design into two pieces: one cropped jacket including the arms and collar, and a separate part made up of the full-length coat. I lined the entire jacket with brown liner and I sandwiched black pig skin leather between the red layers and hammered silver snaps into the front panel. The armpit buckles were also handmade, using aluminum bent into shape.

The belts for the arms and legs were individually patterned and made using a craft foam core and wrapped with scrap leather from an old couch, which each individual buckle I hand made from worbla scraps. The boots are bought but were not the right color, so I used leather paint to dye them the correct shade of brown, then accented them with worbla and nylon screw tops. Vash's holster I crafted from foam wrapped in worbla, while the prop gun was a 3D printed kit bought from Traywick Designs on Etsy, which I then assembled and painted. I wanted to make the manga version where Vash's hair has turned almost entirely black, so the wig is a black lace front with blonde wefts sewn in and lots of styling by my friend Majodere.
